Tell us a bit about you! How was Tutors United founded and what do you do?

Tutors United was founded by Islington-native, Joel Davis in 2013 after being inspired by his own experience tutoring his young cousin, who had needed extra tuition, but whose family couldn't afford it. Since our founding, we've hired and trained over 500 university students to deliver our confidence-boosting, attainment-raising tutorials to over 2,000 children across England. We work with the whole family to provide consistent academic support that sets pupils up to successfully transition to secondary school.

The last few years have been periods of huge growth with the team now reaching 10 and likely to continue growing over the next few months. After years of perfecting our delivery model, we're now looking to raise our profile and grow our influence to better advocate for our families and share all the insight we've gained. As such, we're keen to network with like-minded organisations from the community and learn from their experience as we navigate the world of marketing and communications.

What are you enjoying about Better Space the most, so far?

We've really enjoyed being at Better Space! The space and amenities are all fantastic and Sophie and Simon have both been absolutely fantastic in their support. It's been really great for our new hybrid working culture and the nearby food options are a definite plus!

What advice do you have for people starting out in building a charity?

Don't try to be everything to everyone. Focus on what you are able to do well and be clear in your vision.

Do you have any team vacancies, opportunities or asks for the community?

We are always looking for university students to join our tutor cohort, but at the moment, we do not have any vacancies within our team. However, we are hoping to continue growing next year, so it's always worth keeping an eye out on our website!

Who’s the best baker in the TU team?

While we love any excuse for a cake, we aren't the most gifted group when it comes to baking. Olivia is the only one who makes any claim to this title, but we'll probably stick to the professionals for any upcoming meetings.
